What is Unicheck?
Unicheck is a similarity checker. It verifies the originality of the submitted text or document and delivers a detailed similarity report to the teacher/instructor. Unicheck integrates only into Assignment activity in Canvas LMS.
How to Enable Unicheck in the Canvas Assignment?
STEP 1: In assignment settings, select Online from Submission Type drop-down list, then tick File Uploads and/or Text Entry.
STEP 2: Select the Unicheck option from Plagiarism Review drop-down list.
If you do not see the Unicheck option in the drop-down list, please contact your LMS administrator. In this case, the administrator should verify whether the Unicheck app has been installed properly.
STEP 3: Modify Unicheck default settings if necessary.
Add submissions to Institutional Library. A copy of each submission within this assignment will be automatically saved to Unicheck Institutional Library. Only the final version of this assignment will be used by the system while checking future assignments.
Exclude quotes & references. Unicheck will search and highlight in-text citations and references (APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard). Citations are marked in blue, while references are marked in purple. If this option is active, all highlighted citations and references will be considered original text, which might increase the originality level.
Exclude sources. This option allows to automatically exclude matched sources based on the set parameters. For large texts like theses or dissertations, it is recommended to set the “%” value to “0” in order not to omit relevant matches. The minimum value for “Words” is “8” (set a higher value to omit sources with longer matches).
- Show originality report to students. Choose when you want your students to see their originality reports. The available options are Immediately, After the assignment is graded, After the due date, and Never.
STEP 4: Click Save at the bottom of the page to save assignment settings.

The report provides an opportunity to switch between sources from the Internet and Library. In the case you only need sources from the Internet, please turn off the group of sources from the Library (see the figure below). This way, the excluded sources will be displayed in the “Omitted Sources” section.
Note: if you disable one of the source groups, the percentage of similarity will be recalculated.
Click on the marked area in the report to see a matched source (alternatively, click on a source in the list to show a matched text):
Click Omit source icon to filter out specific matched source:
To include omitted source, scroll down and click Include source icon:
Click View original source icon to view a matched text in the source:
View a match in a source (screenshot below). Click Show plagiarism sections, to browse matches one by one. If you do not see a match on the page, click Show hidden text.
If Auto Exclude Citations and References option is turned ON in the Unicheck assignment settings, citations and references will be filtered out automatically.
Citations identified by Unicheck are marked with blue background color (Unicheck identifies MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian and Harvard styles):
To turn off a specific citation, click Omit citation icon:
To turn on a citation, click Enable this citation icon:
References identified by Unicheck are marked with violet background color.
Please note, when Exclude options for citations/references are ON, total similarity % will be adjusted accordingly:
If you do not have the "Omit" and "Exclude" options, please contact your LMS administrator.
Letters with character replacement and other forms of cheating (font/encoding replacement etc.) are highlighted with bold red formatting with underline. Unicheck reverses replaced encoding and searches for similarities. If match is found - a source is included in the report. Character replacement typically indicates a cheating attempt.
