The Unicheck Plugin for Moodle LMS
Designed based on educators’ feedback, Unicheck is a plagiarism detection engine helping educators spot plagiarism.
To start using the app, please register at unicheck.com or get in touch with the sales team via sales@unicheck.com.
It takes a few minutes to set up your account and get the ball rolling. This plugin integrates with assignment, forum and workshop activities in Moodle to check user-submitted content for plagiarism.

Download the plugin
Go to https://moodle.org/plugins/ and search for Unicheck plugin.

Open the plugin page and download the latest version of the plugin. To download the latest version, click Download (when new version is released, simply update the plugin from the Moodle’s admin interface).

Save the plugin locally on your computer and note the path to the saved file.
Install the plugin
Step 1 - Installation
Log in to Moodle LMS as Admin. Go to Site administration and then to the Plugins sections. Select Install plugins.
Note: Ensure Enable plagiarism plugins option is checked in Site administration → Advanced features. This will allow administrators to configure plagiarism plugins (if installed).

Upload a .zip file (the Unicheck plugin) to Moodle and click Install plugin from ZIP file.
After the plugin is uploaded, make sure that you see Validation successful message. If you encounter any problems at this stage, please contact your Unicheck account manager. Click Continue. Then click Upgrade Moodle database now to finish the installation.

You then will see the Success message. Click Continue.

Step 2 - Configure Moodle cron
Unicheck plugin requires Moodle cron to be properly configured. See documentation Moodle https://docs.moodle.org/33/en/Cron. We recommend scheduling cron as often as possible (more often than once per hour).
Step 3 - Enable support for RAR archives (optional)
Te enable support for RAR archives, you need to install php-ext using command `pecl install rar`. Find more info in this article http://php.net/manual/en/rar.installation.php.
Update the plugin to a latest version
Go to Site administration → Plugins → Plugins overview and review available updates (it is recommended to check for updates once a month or when you experience technical issues):
Click Install this update and follow the installation steps. Unicheck plugin configuration is preserved after update - you do not need to update the key/secret or change settings.
Note: The latest plugin version has a Unicheck API region setting that may need to be changed. Once the plugin is updated, make sure to select the appropriate region for your account in integration settings. The two options available in Unicheck API Region setting are United States and Europe.
After saving the settings it is recommended to click the Debugging tab and check if the settings are correct. If the Unicheck API region setting is invalid, please try selecting a different region .

Upgrade from Unplag plugin to a Unicheck plugin
- Update Unplag plagiarism plugin for Moodle (https://moodle.org/plugins/plagiarism_unplag) to version 3.0.0 or higher.
- Finish all adhoc tasks.
- Install latest version of Unicheck plagiarism plugin for Moodle (https://moodle.org/plugins/plagiarism_unicheck).
During installation all Unplag plugin data is copied to Unicheck plugin database tables. - Uninstall Unplag plagiarism plugin (data will be lost) or disable it (without data loss).
Note: To access Unplag reports after installing a Unicheck plugin, simply enable Unicheck plugin in past assignments. |
Configure the Unicheck plugin defaults
Go to the admin page for plagiarism plugins: Site administration → Plugins → Plagiarism → Manage plagiarism plugins.
You should see the Unicheck plugin in the list of the available plugins. Click Settings.

Update the default message if necessary. The message will be displayed to all students on the file upload page. |

Enable this option to automatically exclude self-plagiarism at the course level. |
Click Save changes.
Switch to the Unicheck defaults tab and configure default settings for the Assignment module.

In case Unicheck was disabled or if you want to generate reports for past submissions, enable this option and save assignment settings. This will trigger bulk check of all work (files and/or text) submitted for grading. Check will start after few minutes after enabling the option. |
Add submissions to Institutional Library |
Student submissions are added to private Institutional Library only when this option is enabled. New student submissions are compared with works stored in this Institutional Library, in addition to Internet. This library consists only from papers submitted by students of this institution and is not shared with other institutions. |

Sources which have less than specified similarity % will not be included in the total similarity score. |

Sources which have less than specified number of words (8 minimum) will not be included in the total similarity score. |
Exclude references and citations |
Enable this option to identify and exclude references and citations. Unicheck identifies citations according to rules described in APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, Harvard guides. Citations will be marked with blue color and references will be marked with violet color. Such items will be excluded from total similarity score. |
Show similarity scores to student |
Students only see similarity scores for their own submissions and do not see scores of other students. |
Show similarity reports to student |
Students only see similarity reports for their own submissions and do not see reports of other students. |
Notify students via email |
Students will receive information about the results of the check via e-mail. |
Maximum number of files to be checked in archive |
Specify maximum number of files to be reviewed by Unicheck. System will pick only file types supported by Unicheck and will process files one by one. Supported formats: ZIP, RAR. |

Note: This step should only be carried out if you are an LMS system administrator or authorized to modify the system's user permissions in Moodle. |
Unicheck supports native roles/permissions model of Moodle. Admin can configure permission for teachers and other roles using standard Moodle permissions tool.
To change teacher’s permissions, open Site administration --> Users --> Permissions --> Define roles click on the ‘cogwheel’ icon to edit teacher’s permissions:
Scroll down to the search box and type in ‘unicheck’ to bring up Unicheck permissions. Adjust the permissions of the teacher in accordance with the requirements of your institution. To prevent the teacher from changing the default configuration of the plugin, uncheck the box next to the name of the corresponding option.

As a result, teachers cannot change the default setting:
Test the Unicheck plugin
This step helps verify that the plugin is activated, all the settings are correct and that the Unicheck report is successfully generated.
Step 1: Create a test assignment
Log in as a teacher (you can use a Log in as feature; please, do not use Switch role to feature) and create test assignment. Open settings for the assignment and go to the Unicheck plugin (Unicheck plagiarism plugin) settings. Enable the Unicheck plugin.
Note: to use Unicheck plugin, first set option Require students click submit button to YES (Submissions settings). |

Save the settings.
Step 2: Submit test assignment
Login as a student (can use Log in as feature) and Add submission to the assignment that has been created previously:
If a score and report have been set to be visible for the student, you will be able to see the score and a link to the Unicheck report:
Click on the chain icon (HTTP link) to view the Unicheck report:
Alternatively, log in as a teacher and go to Assignment. Click View/Grade all submissions to view the test submission.
Click on the chain icon to open the report:

The installation is successful if you can view the Unicheck report and similarity score.
